Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and (hopefully) a fantastic 2021

 Hello everyone

This year has been a very difficult year for us all.  We have all had to deal with Covid-19 and the restrictions and issues that this terrible virus has brought.  The Forum has had a change in staff, with Neil Bishop moving onto pastures and myself joining the Forum in late July as the new manager but also as the Lead Key Support Worker on our employability support programme,

We continue to wish Nazia a full recovery from her illness our thanks to Zahira for stepping into the role as Learning Champion.  My thanks also to all of the tutors that are providing our educational classes, and even though this year has seen some massive changes to the way we deliver our courses, we are still running them.

My special thanks go to Zahira, for all her hard work, dedication and passion that she has for the community of Darnall in organising all the physical aspects of our Covid Response work.  Everything from the food, health and well-being and children's activity packs, of which well over a thousand have been distributed, to the organisation of the Santa's Grotto and the Community Hero's hampers.

I must also mention and give thanks to all of the volunteers who have supported her in completing this work as she would not have been able to it without their generosity and of course we cannot forget the generous donations of items for the packs we have given out, donated local community members, South Yorkshire Police, Caroline- the Community Champion at Catcliffe Morrison's, Radio Hallam South Yorkshire Community Foundation and Sheffield City Council and the Local Councillor's Ward Pot.

My thanks also go to the many organisations within Darnall that I have had the pleasure of working with over the past few months.  If the Covid situation has taught us anything, it is that communities can work together.  Hopefully, you will have received your copy of The Community Connector newsletter that many organisations in Darnall have worked together on.  We need to ensure that as much as we can, we take this community spirit forward into the next year.  Covid is still going to have a massive impact on us for months to come, but it has not and should not stop us from working together more to make our community a brighter place to live, learn, work and play.

I would like to thank our Trustee's who play a vital role in the ongoing life of the forum and offer this invitation to people within our community who would like to become a trustee to get in touch with me in the new year.

But for now, from the Trustee's, Zahira and myself, may you all have a wonderful Christmas time and a fantastic 2021.

Who has been your 2020 hero

A couple of weeks ago we announced that we had 100 hampers to give away to people within the community who had made a difference in other people's lives or in the life of our community.  We received many more nominations than we had hampers, which shows how much of a well loved community we do live and work in.  Here are some of the recipients and some of the hard work completed by our volunteers sand Zahira

Santa's Grotto

Much fun was had by all when Santa popped into his local Grotto.  Lots of presents handed out to Children and Adults alike.

'Food bank'

As manager of the Darnall Forum, I would like to say a massive thank you to all who have helped, over the past few months and especially last week, with the donations and distribution of the food, health and well-being and children's activity packs.

My thanks also go to Zahira, who has worked tirelessly in the organising of this project.  What this has shown is that as a community we can work together.  There have been volunteers from over 18 different organisations involved in the packing and distribution of these much needed packs, which is absolutely fantastic.

Once again a massive well done to all involved and we hope that we can continue to provide support to our everyone who is in need during this time.

Thanks

Message from Zahira, who is co-ordinating our food bank

As winter approaches, the effects of Coronavirus continue to trap people in poverty. Food banks in the Trussell Trust network are forecast to provide a  staggering six emergency food parcels every minute. This cannot be right.

In my interview this morning on the Toby Foster show I highlighted the importance of providing food packs to struggling families and how it’s never the child’s fault. I shared that Darnall Forum will strive to ensure no family goes to sleep on a empty stomach.

A massive thank you to Community champion Morrisons Meadowhead, Lucy Gibson and the staff at Morrisons for their extremely generous donation. We could not do this without your amazing support.

Thank you to Sheffield Libraries, Archives & Information for donating children books. The smiles on the young people’s face shows the difference we are collectively making to their lives.

Thank you to our local MP Clive Betts for the food donations and attending to support our initiatives.

Thank you to Natasha Iqbal for baking chocolate brownies and providing desserts for our volunteers.

A big Thank You to Kinder Kalsi  Gina Kalsi, Adeel Kahn Yasmeen Ali Ana Yousaf Farha Iqbal Sohail Mumtaz Zee Zaman Syd Khaan Manuch Manuch Hadis Lk for helping with packing and delivering food parcels and children’s activity packs. Over 150 packs were made today. We have a great team and will continue to support the most vulnerable in our communities. We are always here to help

Community Education

We are looking forward to welcoming learners back into the Forums classes soon.  As you can imagine, our first priority is keeping our staff and learners safe during the pandemic.

We have introduced social distancing measures and other Covid-19 prevention methods in order to keep everyone safe.  This means that there are some changes in timetabling our classes including staggard start times and reduced learner numbers in each session.  We will also be making use of technology and offering some of our sessions online where appropriate.

Please bear with us as we make these changes following both national and local guidelines.  We are working closely with Sheffield City Council and our staff to ensure lessons can take place.

When our timetable is finalised we will publicise it on the bog and through social media.

Announcement from Sheffield City Council

Adult learning provision suspended

In light of the government announcement yesterday, 18 March 2020, and with further guidance from the Secretary of State for Education, all adult learning provision will close temporarily from close of play Friday 20 March 2020.  We are monitoring the situation daily and cannot give any definitive timeline for when normal services will resume.
I realise that this will be concerning for those that have examinations coming up over the next two weeks, and these will have to be postponed at this time.  The government has indicated they will make further announcements regarding this in the coming days, and we will await this guidance to make any further decisions concerning examinations and achievement of qualifications.
We understand how disappointing this will be for all our learners, and we are busy working to look for ways of keeping in touch with them, so their progress is disrupted as little as possible.  Please encourage all learners to check our social media pages, and the Council website for any further updates and information.
As our partners, I also realise that this will be a concerning time for you and your staff, and I can assure you that we are working to try and resolve any immediate issues or concerns you may have.  We will stay in contact and update you as soon as we can, please continue to follow the guidance for COVID-19, and check our social media and the Council website for further updates and information.
